PTA and First Grade Performance Tonight!

Dear Parents,
Don't forget we have our PTA meeting tonight and the first grade performance. Please, if possible, have your child wear a white shirt and blue pants or skirt. Please have your child here by 6:45 and send them down to their specials class in our first grade hall. Your child will know what class to go into when they come.
On another subject, we have our book exchange tomorrow. So if you have any books that your child would like to trade in for a different book, please have the books here Wednesday.
Finally, we are having a food drive for families in need. Please send in some canned goods or prepackaged foods if you can. We want our fanmilies to have a nice Thanksgiving.
Thank you!

Challenge for Friday

Dear Parents,
Since we are learning about shapes, I thought the students could use a challenge. I'd like your child to find something at home that can be brought into school that represents one of the following shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, cone, or a triangular prism. Then have them write how many corners and how many flat faces it has. Have them bring it into school tomorrow so we can share and have a "shape museum". Please make sure their name is on it and that the item is unbreakable.
Thank you!

Field Trip On Friday!

Dear Parents,
I've been worried about the weather for our field trip on Friday. However, it looks like the bad weather will be through by tomorrow night. You can check the weather for Cagle's by going to the following website:
cagles
Please be sure to dress your child in something comfortable! Also, if they are bringing their own lunch, rather than the school lunch, it must be in a throw-away container.
Thank you,
Mrs. Yelken

Are You Up for a Challenge?

Dear Parents,

We'll be reading The Itsy Bitsy Spider  this week in shared reading. The children will be doing some activities with a spider theme in literacy centers. For fun, they can go to the website listed below and find the answers to my blog challenge questions. Write the answers down, bring them in, and they'll get a special treat from me! Happy searching!

The website is http://www.kidzone.ws/lw/spiders/facts.htm

Here are the challenge questions:

1. To what group of animals do spiders belong?

2. How many legs do they have?

3. Are spiders insects? Why or why not?

4. How many knees do spiders have?

5. What is a spider's skeleton called AND where is it?

6. What do all spiders have? (Hint: most have venom in them!)

Upcoming Events

Dear Parents,
We have several events coming upon us quickly! The first is the Keheley Fall Festival this Friday. We are short in our class for volunteers for a couple of 1 hour shifts, so if you can help out, please let Pam Kent or Karen McElvaney know. The second event is our field trip to Cagle's Dairy Farm. We need all donations by Wednesday, October 10th, or we will not be able to go. If you have not sent in your child's payment yet, please get it to me before Wednesday. Last, we are having our Keheley Book Fair the week of October 22nd. The link for it is below.

Testing Celebration

Dear Parents,
I am so pleased with your children. They all have been present and on time. That really helps with their frame of mind during testing. They are working hard, doing their best, and paying close attention during the testing. What more can we ask for? Give your child a big hug and kiss and tell them you are proud of them!

Read-In This Friday:)

Friday, the 21st, is the day we've been anticipating. We will get to wear "groovy" clothes and have a "read-in" in the media center. Please have your child bring a book or 2 they like to read and a flashlight, too. This is such a fun way to cultivate the love of reading! We had such creative "pirates" the other day, I can't wait to see all the 60's outfits! Wow, man!

Please don't forget about our Instructional Night on Tuesday evening, September 11. It will be from 6:30-7:30. There will be a Harcourt Representative to show you all the wonderful components we have for our new math book series. Parents can use it online as well. There's quite a lot! Come and join us.
