January and February's reading focus is on nonfiction. We will be reading nonfiction material to support the space unit in science as well as newspaper articles, reading charts and graphs, and short nonfiction articles. Our writing focus is on nonfiction/research/informational writing. We will be doing some expository and informational essays. The big project we'll be working on is a research paper. Students will use the media center and internet for their research. The outline and paper will be typed at school. Student need a pack of 3 by 5 note cards for this project. There will be step by step directions for how to write a research paper. It is a good idea to save this for the next time they have a research paper assignment.

Pin Wheel Book Report on a biography is due Feb.27.

In writing we are working on using the writing process. (plan, rough draft, revise, edit, final copy) Students will be given a copy of the Georgia Writing Rubric for Fourth and Fifth Grade to keep in their expandable folder. They will use the rubric for self-evaluation.
