Well, our first week is over and we are ready to kick it into high gear. We have gotten to know each other, set our routines, set up our notebooks, done all of our pre-assessments, and started learning some of our standards. Thank you for sending in all of the paperwork so quickly!
This week we will begin our Fire Safety program. The firefighters will come into our classroom on Wednesday to introduce the unit. We will leave campus next Wednesday (8/31) to go to the Fire Safety Village. Please return the permission slips as soon as possible! Then the following week the firefighters will come back to visit our classroom. Expect fire safety homework during the next few weeks.
Thursday night is Skate Night from 6-8PM and Friday is Spirit Day! Also, on Friday we will attend a character education program called The Ned Show. This program focuses on character, motivation and encouragement and the presenters use yo-yos throughout the show.
Weekly Standards
Math~ Students will further develop their understanding of how whole numbers and decimals are represented in the base-ten numeration system by identifying place value and equating a number in standard form (32,418) to its expanded form (30,000 + 2,000 + 400 + 10 + 8).
ELA (English Language Arts)~ Students will go through the entire writing process on a personal narrative. We will determine meanings of words and alternate word choices by using a dictionary or thesaurus. In reading, I will be recording fluency rates and we will address the standard of reading with a rhythm, flow, and meter that sounds like everyday speech.
Spelling~ Sort 1 focuses on syllable juncture. We will look at our spelling words and split them at the syllables and discuss why that gives it a long or short vowel sound.
Words for the week of 8/22: climate, humid, treaty, freedom, season, react, metric, comet, profit, transmit.
Social Studies~ We have started working on our maps and globes standards. This week we will focus on historical maps, product and resource maps, world maps, and economic maps.
