Third Grade-
We will be measuring elapsed time in Math. We have used our geared clocks to calculate the time as we relate this to everyday situations, such as the length of a movie or a field trip. We will enjoy some great activities on the Smart Board which reinforce elapsed time.
Our sound pattern in Reading is VC/CV as in the word 'muffin'. Learning to divide words into syllables helps a child to decode and spell new words. We are reading a book titled Another Point of View as we learn about fact and opinion. This also supports our writing of persuasive pieces with topics, such as "Why I Should Receive an Allowance" and "Why Students Need Recess".
Second Grade-
We will continue to practice subtraction of three digit numbers as we move to a math unit of solid shapes. We will use manipulatives and the smart board to identify shapes, such as cylinders, spheres, pyramids, and cones in our everyday world. We'll combine these solid shapes to make new shapes.
In Reading we are learning about suffixes and base words. We have been working with the suffixes 's' and 'es' as well as the different sounds 'ed' makes at the end of a word. We will read a story titled A Moose is Loose as we discuss elements of a story that are fantasy.
First Grade-
In Math we are learning strategies to help us in solving word problems using addition and subtraction. We highlight key information and clue words as well as draw pictures to solve problems. We will use these skills as we solve problems using money.
Our vowel pattern is the sound of long 'o" as in the word 'toast'. We will make a 'toad' word wheel as we read and spell words containing 'oa'. We will read The Silly Toad and become word detectives as we search for long o words within the text.
