Welcome once again to first grade and to the class blog! I am super excited to get to know each and every one of you and begin another wonderful year at Keheley! This blog will be used to communicate with you quickly and efficiently. I will give class news, guided questions, important links, fun games, etc... throughout the year.
A BIG shout out to all of you who attended Open House last Thursday! It was great to meet new parents. We both have your child's best interest at heart. Remember...We Are A Team! Please feel free to discuss any concerns or questions regarding your child. This will allow us to have a successful year!
Monday we will begin behavior calendars in our red folders. Please initial each night! THANKS! We will also be sending home orange homework folders. Homework is due back on Fridays. (We will take a few minutes as a class to discuss how we will use the notebook paper that is provided for your child.) PLEASE help your child when needed, however, allow them to complete it independently. At this age, it is important for children to see what mistakes they are making and learn from them. Homework is just a reinforcement of skills that they have learned or are learning. Thank you for your help and being your child's homework partner and supporter this year!
Nightly reading to, with and by your child is strongly recommended in addition to their 10 minutes. Reading is a main focus in first grade. We have 200 sight words to learn and will really be building our fluency and comprehension. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: sight words need to be read in a snap... we DO NOT sound these words out!
Here are some Guided Questions to use at home the next nine weeks for each subjest are:
Reading: How do I become a great reader?
Writing: How do I become a great writer?
Math: What do numbers represent?
Science: What are the different types of weather?
Social Studies: What parts make up our Earth? What is your global address?
These are the broad topics we will be covering in each subject area this nine weeks. I hope each child can answer the questions at the end of the grading period!
This week we begin to learn how we will be doing literacy and math centers. Each center will be modeled and discussed so that the children can begin next weeks centers independently or in a cooperative group! We will also be kicking off writer's workshop. So much to do!!!!
Have a wonderful week!!!
Bye For Now!!!
