We are dancing in Physical Education and getting ready for our school dance. We have some of the BEST dancers in the county. They are totally tubular! Next, we will start jumping rope and raising money for Jump Rope for Heart on March 2, 2012. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, March 10th too! This is Healthy Kids Georgia Day on the Capitol lawn to celebrate health and wellness among our children. Casey Cagle has personally invited us via email. There will be a 1-mile fun run then a wellness fair to follow. I will be posting the information on my blog and would love for you to come and bring your family to this event.

Family Nutrition Tips

Meals

• Make a meal together! Cooking healthy meals with your kids teaches them that eating well can be fun.
• Sit down as a family for dinner. Not only will it improve family unity but it has been shown to promote a healthy weight in kids.
• Set healthy family goals such as trying a new vegetable at dinner or bike riding together after meals. Get everyone involved by setting the goals as a family unit.
• Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables to power up with vitamins and antioxidants!
• Check out www.choosemyplate.gov as a family and then plan a meal that incorporates all five food groups.
• Do you have a picky eater at home? Research shows that it can take as many as 10 to 15 tastes before a child will learn to appreciate a new flavor, so try again and again.
• Breakfast is a great meal for fiber. Serve your kids a bowl of oatmeal and fruit, or whole grain bread and yogurt. 
• Teach kids to associate fruits and vegetables with fun experiences. Shop together at farmer’s markets or demonstrate to them how much you enjoy salads and healthy options.
• When eating out, set a good example for children by ordering a healthy meal for yourself. Order foods that are steamed, broiled, grilled, roasted, or poached.
• Make mealtime conversation cards with nutrition questions or download them for free from www.nourishinteractive.com!
• Restaurants serve potions that are too large for one meal. Avoid oversized portions by sharing with a friend, taking half of the meal home, or ordering an appetizer instead of an entrée for your meal.
• It can be tough to get kids to eat breakfast and ready for school, but breakfast makes a big difference in your child’s performance!  It refuels their bodies after a long night of sleep and gives them the energy they need to be successful in class.

We are going to start the new year off right by incorporating Yoga into some classes.  Mrs. Karen McElvaney is volunteering 3 days in the gym to teach " Yoga Flow" to our students in grades 3-5.  I want to send out a BIG thank you to her for the time and energy she gives throughout the year here at Keheley ES.  She is a wonderful parent, wife, fitness instructor, PTA volunteer, friend, and so much more! Karen, you are awesome!:-)

The older students are also setting goals in the gym to increase the number of push-ups they can do. We will discuss the importance of setting goals, and put to practice this life long skill. I think it is important to set realistic goals. Sometimes you may need to set several small goals to reach one BIG goal. We will focus on one fitness goal at a time. We will do a push-up test, and see if we can improve the number of push-ups they can do in a 6 week period. I challenge you to do it too.    

We have an exciting year ahead of us, filled with lots of celebrations.  Mark your calendar for February 25th for our 25th year celebration!

A new year, a new you!

 

Here’s a dirty little secret about white sugar: It contains absolutely no nutritional value.  Sugar is often called the anti-nutrient. Consumption of sugar steals important vitamins and minerals from the body such as calcium, potassium, thiamin, chromium and vitamin C. ¹

Processed sugars and carbohydrates, which convert into sugar, will cause a rapid increase in insulin levels in the bloodstream. This rapid increase causes a release of endorphins. These endorphins will cause the body to have a chemical mental “high”, which lifts your mood.

Continuous use of sugar causes the brain’s endorphin sites to slow and shut down to regulate the amount of endorphins in the brain.  When these endorphin sites are damaged in the brain it will cause a chemical mental “low”, commonly called depression. To maintain endorphin levels in the brain, a person must consume more sugar to get out of the depressed state. This will cause a vicious cycle of depression and addiction. 

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology found low levels of insulin and serotonin to have a higher incidence of depression and suicidal tendencies.  Too much sugar has been found to deplete serotonin levels in the brain, thus producing depression.  According to research, low levels of serotonin also trigger sugar cravings.  Our adrenal glands release cortisol to address the damaging effects of sugar in our body.  Cortisol is a stress hormone proven to cause weight gain. 

One of the most important nutritional supplements found to counteract the effects of sugar and depression is Omega-3 fatty acids.² Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce the damaging effects of cortisol while promoting healthy production of serotonin.  The ideal balance of Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids has been found to be in a 2:1 ratio.³  The Standard American Diet (SAD) often contains 25 times more omega-6 than omega -3 fatty acids.

First Down for Fitness MVP

On behalf of the Atlanta Falcons, congratulations on having one of your students, Eve Thomas, selected as a 2011 Falcons First Down for Fitness MVP.   Out of over 50,000 students, around the state of Georgia, 11 students were selected as First Down for Fitness MVPs based upon their conscious effort and commitment to eating healthy, staying active and demonstrating sportsmanship at their school.

The First Down for Fitness MVPs will be recognized during the Sunday, November 27 game at 1pm when the Falcons take on the Minnesota Vikings.

Keheley Fun Run 2011

Date:  November 5, 2011

Location:  Keheley Elementary School

Time:  8:00am                                          

We want to encourage everyone in our community to join us for the Keheley Fun Run. Let’s get everyone moving in this non-competitive event by walking, running, jogging, or strolling 2.4 miles.

“No pets, bicycles, skateboards, or inline skates will be allowed.”

Facilities

Parking is in front of Keheley Elementary School.

Bathroom facilities are in the school.

Refreshments are provided at the finish, which is located in the back of the school.

T-Shirt pick up will be at the back of the school.

Course

The course is 2.4 miles and will start/finish at the back of the school. Course begins by taking a left out of the back of the school, then a right, right, and right until it loops around to the back of the school.  One loop is 1.2 miles for those who tire out quickly. Two loops will really challenge your heart and mind!

Cougar Running Club

HI Cougar parents,

 

I feel like the kids are really pumped up about our run club, and I am so excited to see them that way!  They truly inspire me:-)

 

  We will keep meeting through the month of November on Mondays, and then take a 3 month break for the cold weather. If the temperature is 40 degrees or below we are not supposed to be out there for more than 10 minutes. If we have inclement weather again, I will exercise with them in the gym because it is too hard trying to figure out transportation at the end of the day. We will have to share the gym with the After School Program, and there will be a lot of kids in there. I would like to start back in March and attend the Peachtree Jr. Race. I'm going to sign our school up with the Atlanta Track Club.  They offer incentives for the kids if they complete a certain mileage, offer lesson plans, and even shoes if your child is in need. They also will pay the registration fees for the Peachtree Jr. Race this spring;-)

 

So here are the dates we have left until March:

October 31

November 7, 14, and 28

 

I have the water covered through November.  Is there anyone willing to bring snack November 14, and/or November 28?  They love the snacks and have earned them by the end of the run!!

We have had people splitting the snacks, so that it cuts down on the expense.  There are 29 kids now:-)

When the outside temperature or wind chill factor is 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below,
school staff should take students outside no longer than 15 minutes. Students should

YMCA Volleyball
The Northeast Cobb and Northwest Cobb YMCAs are teaming up with Cobb Atlanta Volleyball to offer a recreational volleyball league. Our mission is to teach each player the game of volleyball in a healthy environment. Players will grow as an individual as well as a team participant. In order to introduce the sport, Cobb Atlanta will be offering skill session clinics leading up to the Fall season.

Keheley Elementary School Hosts the Check Your Choice® Tour to Educate Students on Smart Choices for a Healthy Lifestyle

  Wholly Guacamole® and Austin Andrews of The Biggest Loser® to present an interactive and educational presentation  

 

MARIETTA, GA – September 23, 2011 – Keheley Elementary School is pleased to announce that they will join six schools across the East Coast as part of the very first Check Your Choice Tour, an initiative launched by Wholly Guacamole, the nation’s leading guacamole brand. Teaming up with Austin Andrews, recent finalist from NBC’s The Biggest Loser®, the Check Your Choice tour will visit schools to educate children about the small choices that make a big difference for healthy living.

 

With childhood obesity becoming a national epidemic, Keheley Elementary School is doing their part to raise awareness on maintaining a healthy lifestyle beginning with students in the Marietta community. Students will experience an interactive and educational presentation hosted by Austin Andrews, who will share fun and interesting facts about nutrition and exercise in a 60 minute assembly. Andrews will bring the audience to their feet and end the assembly with an acoustical performance of his own Check Your Choice Rock-n-Roll anthem.

 

“As we work together to educate students on healthy eating and the importance of exercise, we also strive to provide families with the knowledge and support to develop good habits for a lifetime,” said Liz Jackson, Principal of Keheley Elementary School. “We are thrilled to be a part of the Check Your Choice Tour.  We look forward to a fun, engaging and interactive presentation that teaches our children important lessons about healthy living.”

 

The Check Your Choice Tour includes produce super-star brands such as Food Should Taste Good, Mann’s Vegetables™, Nature Sweet® and Produce for Kids®, a non-profit dedicated to educating families on the benefits of healthy eating and supporting worthy causes for children. The tour will make stops at schools and other community gathering places in New York, NY, Baltimore, MD, Sterling, VA,  Henrico, VA, Smithfield, NC and Charleston, SC with this first leg of the tour finishing up in Atlanta, GA on September 24.
