Dear Parents,

Last week was very productive in First Grade!  The children have been working hard and have enjoyed learning about the weather in Science lessons.  We also started our math groups and they worked well together.  Thank you for writing back to your child in the Letter Writing Notebooks.  They are eager to write back!

On the homework sheet you will sometimes see that a reading response is required.  This means that your child can read any book independently or with you and then write a response about that book (Their favorite part, something about the main character, the setting or events in the story).  A minimum of three sentences is required.

Spelling words will be sent home on Monday.  Please help your child prepare for the quiz on Friday which will require them to be able to write each word correctly.

This week in class we will be working on the following:

Math – Simple Addition to 12 (no regrouping).  Using the ‘Counting on’ strategy to add two numbers (put one number in your head and count on to find the sum).  Math problem solving, graphs and fair trades between pennies and dimes.  Days of the week and months of the year.

Literacy - responding to stories and poems, initial letter sounds, short vowel 'e', antonyms (opposites such as happy and sad, tall and short).  Writer's workshop - writing a journal entry (personal narrative), writing a letter. Identifying a complete sentence (capital letter at beginning, punctuation at the end, tells a complete idea or thought and must be written legibly with finger spaces).

Science – Weather Instruments: rain gauge, wind vane, thermometer.  Review types of weather and the four seasons.

Handwriting - Letter Ii

WALK FIT

Walk Fit for Keheley

We are excited to tell you about our Walk Fit program for the students at Keheley Elementary School this year.  Walk Fit is an optional walking program for students before the school day starts. We all know how good walking is for people of all ages.  We want for the students to understand the importance of exercise on a regular basis and the only way for them to really understand it, is to do it!  When we have the students in our Physical Education class, we are following a curriculum and need every minute to teach them a variety of activities and movement concepts. We want to teach the children that frequency is important in an exercise program. Students will arrive at school and check in with their teacher. The students will then exit the building to the track through A Wing ONLY. This will keep students away from the bus area and safe. The students will sign in with Mrs. Lawson or Mrs. Tramble and then start walking around the track. This is another great way to develop a healthy lifestyle.  We will be walking one day a week for each grade level with the exception of Kindergarten. If there is inclement weather, we will walk in the gym. This walking program will be a positive, stress free way to start the day. We hope that the children will be able to go back to their classrooms and be more alert to focus on their classroom work

We want to start Walk Fit on August 29, 2011.

Schedule:

7:25 am-7:45am  

Monday-grades 1-2

Wednesday-grades 3-4

Friday-fifth grade

Walk Fit Rules

1. Report to classroom teachers first.
2. Students must exit the building through A Wing to the track.
3. Students will show appropriate behavior while walking on the track or be sent back to the classroom.
4. Proper clothing and athletic shoes are required.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to my Blog. This is where you can find out what we are learning in class each week. I normally up-date my blog every week. I am looking forward to teaching your child this year. With your support we can make sure your child has the best learning experiences and a successful year in First Grade!

All of the Standards are accessible through the page links on the right. Please take some time to look at the First Nine Weeks standards for Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies.

Please check your child's red folder everyday. There will be important information in it this week. If you have questions about anything please feel free to call and leave a message at school...I will call you back as soon as I can. If you are making a change to your child's normal dismissal plans, please let the front office know before 1:45pm on that day (Unless you have already sent me a note that morning).

Here's a little information about me! I was born in the United Kingdom and spent most of my life there. I studied in London and have been teaching for twenty-fiveyears...it was always my passion and I come from a family of teachers! Throughout my career I have always enjoyed a challenge and thus spent a year teaching in Los Angeles, a year teaching in France and two years teaching in Singapore at a British School. I have been living and teaching in Georgia for eight years now. My experiences have taught me many things but most of all that children are the same wherever you go...eager to learn and a joy to teach! I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year.
