HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Reminders:
· NO school on Monday, January 16th.
· Skate Night is on Thursday, Jan. 19th from 6-8 PM!
· Report cards come home on January 17th. PLEASE sign your signature card and return the card back in the envelope unsealed. Keep your copy of the report. Remember that if your child has a “2” it is okay...they are in progress with the standard. It is also possible that a “2” is because we are "under construction" with a standard and your child is not consistently meeting that standard. A “3” means that your child consistently knows the standard.
Learning targets for the next 2 weeks:
Language Arts- We will discuss possessive pronouns...What's Mine is Mine...A possessive pronoun is when a pronoun is used to show possession by modifying a noun or pronoun (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs, whose).
Reading- We will continue to make connections, and reviewing all our reading strategies. We will really be working on building our fluency and expression in the New Year! PLEASE be sure your child is reading at least 10 minutes every night and that they continue to take 2 AR tests a week. It is so obvious in guided reading who is a reader outside of our group time. Good readers should be able to retell important details, characters, setting and the most difficult thing is to be able to tell the main idea. Many of our friends are struggling with main idea.
Writing- How do I write to inform? We will begin to learn how to write “How To” pieces. We will work on using some very important transition words to do this...at the beginning, first, next, then, after that, finally are just a few we will use.
Math- We will be learning about fractions. What are equal parts? How do I represent parts of a whole? We will discuss equal sets, halves, fourths, whole and equal shares.
***Please know that we must not forget any of the math standards that have been covered. We will now go deeper with each one. Money will increase to $1.00 and addition and subtraction facts jump to 18. Skip counting will continue so practice counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. Know all numbers and where they are located. Remember the patterns on the hundreds board. Practice, practice, practice!!!
Science- Where does light come from? The children will learn that light comes from different sources. They will also learn about shadows and how they are made. We are sure to have fun by making and creating shadows.
Have a great week!
