The learning targets for the week!
Math- We have been learning about 2 dimensional (2-D) shapes! The children have learned about the pentagon, hexagon, triangle, and rectangle. Ask them about each of these shapes and have them recognize these shapes outside of school. This week we will be learning about 3 dimensional (3-D) shapes (cylinders, cones, rectangular prisms). Have your child tell you the difference between the 2-D and 3-D shapes. The children have to be able to build, draw, name, describe, compare, and classify shapes by common attributes.
Writing- The fantastic turkeys that you decorated with your child have inspired him or her to write. The children did such a great job disguising their turkeys. The children have been learning and understanding the writing process. We begin the writing process by using a graphic organizer to help think through what he or she will write about. Then the students begin to write his or her draft. After he or she writes they edit with a partner (which is super cute) and then edit with the teacher. You will get see the published version. Remember that when we edit a story we like to only focus on one learning target such as punctuation, capitalization, writing about one event, looking for understanding, a good beginning, and a good ending.
Social Studies- We will be learning about Lewis and Clark. Do you know what they did?
Reading- The children have learned about compound words. A compound word is 2 different words put together make a new word such as butterfly and rainbow. Also, we have been learning how to use a dictionary. The children are learning to find words in the dictionary and understand why we use a dictionary. If you have a dictionary at home, tell your child a word to look up. Ask them what are the guide words, the definition, pronunciation, and the sentence used in the dictionary.
What can you do at home?
· Practice addition and subtraction facts to 12 with flash cards. Can your child tell you the answer in a snap?
· Count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100.
· Identify 2-D and 3-D shapes when you are out and about.
· Counting coins up to a dollar using quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies.
Enjoy your week and Thanksgiving Holiday!
