Oops! The week of Aug. 29th!

I am so sorry I forgot to post what we are learning this week! Yikes!

Reminders:

• Spelling Quiz is on Friday! Remember that the letter "I" is the only capital letter I should see!
• Your child can purchase yo-yo's all week. On Friday they can bring them to school and play with them at recess!
• No school on Monday! Enjoy your long weekend!

What have we been learning this week?

Science- We are learning about the seasons and the words that describe the weather. Also, we are learning about the tools we use to measure temperature, wind, and rain. Can your child tell you what a meteorologist does?

Reading- We are talking about the main character in the story and the setting.

Writing- We are working on writing a sentence correctly. When your child writes a story look for sentences beginning with a capital letter (no capitals letters in the middle of words), punctuation at the
end of a sentence, and spacing between every word.

Has your child told you what CUPS stands for when we write?

Language Arts Skill- Antonyms

Math- We continue to work on using the words greater than, fewer than, more than, less than, and equal to. Also, we are learning how to add. Here are some of the terms that we have been learning:

4 + 2 = 6 is an addition sentence

1 + 2 = 3 (The 3 is the sum.)

Plus sign (+ ) means to add.

The symbol = means equals.

Walk Fit

Walk Fit for Keheley

 We are excited to tell about our Walk Fit program for the students at Keheley Elementary School this year.  Walk Fit is an optional walking program for students before the school day starts. We all know how good walking is for people of all ages.  We want for the students to understand the importance of exercise on a regular basis and the only way for them to really understand it, is to do it!  When we have the students in our Physical Education class, we are following a curriculum and need every minute to teach them a variety of activities and movement concepts. We want to teach the children that frequency is important in an exercise program. Students will arrive at school and check in with their teacher. The students will then exit the building to the track through A Wing ONLY. This will keep students away from the bus area and safe. The students will sign in with Mrs. Lawson or Mrs. Tramble and then start walking around the track. This is another great way to develop a healthy lifestyle.  We will be walking one day a week for each grade level with the exception of Kindergarten. If there is inclement weather, we will walk in the gym. This walking program will be a positive, stress free way to start the day. We hope that the children will be able to go back to their classrooms and be more alert to focus on their classroom work.

            We want to start Walk Fit on August 29, 2011.

Schedule:

7:25 am-7:45am  

Monday-grades 1-2

Wednesday-grades 3-4

Friday-fifth grade

 We would appreciate your support for the Walk Fit program. We think this could make a positive difference in the lives of our students here at the school.

Standards for the Week!

Math- We are learning more than, less than, greater than, fewer than, equal to, and comparing numbers.  Can your child answer these questions?  How did he or she get the answer?

What numbers are before and after 20?

What is one more than 22?

 How many fewer ____ are there than _____?   or  How many more _____ are there than ______?

Reading- We are learning about how we treat books, identifying the characters, discussing the setting, and identifying a “just right”book.  Ask your child how he or she knows if the book is “just right”.

Science- We are learning about different types of weather.

Writing- We are reviewing the correct way to write a sentence.  Ask your child what CUPS stands for later this week!

• Homework is due every Friday!
• Have you joined PTA?
• Skate Night is on Thursday, Aug. 25^th from 6-8 PM.
• Spirit Day is every Friday!

Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome back to school! Thanks for the wonderful turn out at Sneak-a-Peek! We had a 100% turn out! WOW! We are going to have a great first week back at school! We will learn school and classroom expectations, make new friends, and jump into learning standards. Your child will learn the expectations in the classroom, cafeteria, hallway, recess, bathroom, media center, bus, and special events. Ask your child if he or she know expectations in each of these areas.
